How do you get your name (at least the first name) officially changed?

It depends on where you live. In Kentucky, I had to file a petition with the Circuit Court Clerk's office. I paid a fee, was given a date to go before a judge, and he granted the name change. The form was simple, and the fee was less than $20 at the time.

Make a few phone calls to your local court system. Someone there will be able to point you in the right direction.
