How to I get a legal first name change in new york city?

My official first name is long ethnic name, which even my parents don't use. I want to change it to my nick name. My nick name is the name everyone calls me by. And most people don't even know my official first name. I am over 25. What's the procedure? Is it just forms and paperwork? And why would anyone pay a lawyer to do this?

Hi there. Heres a link to the appropriate paperwork, you do not need a lawyer to change your name as an adult. http://nycourts.gov/courts/nyc/civil/pdf...

Fill it out and take it to the clerk's office. As long as nobody has an interest in your name and your name of choice is non-offensive, you shouldn't have a problem.
Reply:Go down to the place where they have your birth certificate get information on how to get you name changed ask them what is the procedure in changing your name now possibility there is going to be paper work to fill out and a cost to have your name changed, you can get the cost waviered by the court if you request to go in front of a judge.
