What is the procedure to have your first name officially changed?

Does it differ between states? How much does it cost?

What is the procedure to have your first name officially changed?
I think the process is the same, the cost probably differs though.

I believe you go down to the courthouse, you get an application, submit it. Although I do believe is some states you have go before a judge. But it may depend on WHY you are changing your name.

Like if you got divorced and you wanted to change your name back to your maiden name, it is probably a lot easier than if your name is Tracy Smith and you want to change your name to Zigbot Thetan 2. LOL.
Reply:Basically you just go to the courthouse and file some paperwork. A judge will ask you why you are doing it, and 99% of the time he will grant it as long as you arent doing it for some illegal reason (like hiding from the law). Its not expensive, less than $100.

Reply:You have to be a US Citizen. You should be 18 or older otherwise take your parents with you. Have your US passport or Birth Cirtificate. Go to Court and file for change.

There are some names that you cannot choose.

Finally, get your new birth certificate, certificate of naturalization or passport re issued.

Inform the required personnel.
Reply:Hey , I found this website that answers legal questions, check it out, it has alot of info regarding our laws. Hope this helps. Look under family law on this site it has a section on name changes.
Reply:i have had to do this personal reasons but anyways.. go to the court house you will have to fill out paperwork, you will be asked to put your name in the news paper the one you want to change it to and then if no one contest it you can have that name ... i don't quite remember how much it was i changed my last name like OK 10 years ago... anyways good luck..
Reply:Contact your local municipality/township for papers to fill out %26amp; costs and you'll have to get forms from all your cards (ex: SIN, Driver's, Credit Cards etc %26amp; there will be extra costs for these to be reissued) But once you change your name they have to put a advertisment in 2 or 3 local papers that your name is change from this to that. At least this is the way it goes in Canada.
