And for extra points can you tell me what it means when someone puts three dots after everything they write? For example:





Hi it's nice to see you again... it's been a while... mate... so how's things with you these days...





Maybe it's just me but I find it kinda rude or that they're not really interested in what you're telling them, can you tell me the right meaning?

and i think it's because they like that button and have to press it other wise they just feel inadequate =) also to fill the sentence out other wise it looks a little thin

I know the proper use of the three dots, however people who use it like that, in your exemplar, are using it incorrectly.





They are mainly for quoting things and they symbolize other words left out of the sentence or quote. For example:





If i were to quote Marcus Aurelius, but not write out his entire quote, then i would use those three dots.





Therefore If i were to quote: "Anything in any way beautiful derives its beauty from itself and asks nothing beyond itself. Praise is no part of it, for nothing is made worse or better by praise." but didn't want to write the entire quote, i'd condense it using the three dots.





So that quote now becomes, "Anything in any way beautiful derives its beauty from itself....nothing is made worse of better by praise." (four dots means that there is a full stop somewhere in the ...)





Hope that helps, and sorry if i confused you more. Though you shouldn't be offended, because those people are ignorant for using the three dots incorrectly.

oh and i also use the dots, but it's not cause i'm not interested it's because i have lots to say, so it's my way of jumping from one thought to the other, without using full stops, because you can't really see one full stop.....hope you're enjoying yourself (there that's me jumping from talking about using lots of dots and then wishing you good health :P)

the reason 4 the.....dots is a pause while ur thinking of what 2 write/say. just think of the dots as an "um" while ur talking. think of "vocally" talking 2 some1. 4 ex- " what do u want from the store?" the person answers, " i want beer, milk %26amp; um, cookies." now, if that same question is typed or hand-written, it could b 1 of 2 ways. " i want beer, milk %26amp; um.....cookies." OR " i want beer, milk %26amp;...........cookies." it doesnt mean that the person's being rude or they're not interested. its just a form of expression.
Reply:The answer is four for your first question. To your second question they are leaving information out. I know it from quotes. You take whatever portion you want from the quote but if you don't take the entire thing you either put ... prior or after, whatever portion you left out.

3 dots means that there would be more to say but they either left it alone or want you to figure it out. If they're quoting something, it means that there is more, but that part is insignificant to their point.

For your second question people use that punctuation to pause. Some people just abuse the crap out of it.

Three dots means etcetera. It usually means "and more similar" or can be used to represent a pause in a sentence...before you continue...with more of the same...
