Steer clear of Emily, Isabella, Emma, Ava, Madison, Sophia, Olivia, Abigail, and Hannah - although they are lovely names, they are all in the top 10 baby names, and verrrrry popular. (Elizabeth is, too, but it's just such an enduring classic - not like some of the others, whose meteoric rise to popularity was very recent).





I'd also steer clear of the #11-20 names, if you are looking to keep it on the "unusual" side. Those names are: Addison, Samantha, Ashley, Alyssa, Mia, Chloe, Natalie, Sarah, Alexis, and Grace. Again, perfectly lovely names, some of which I adore and have included as middle names (or variations of as first names) on the list I created - but just not "unusual" at the moment.

There are a lot of classic names out there to choose from. You can go to http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/


and choose any year after 1879 and get the most popular names from that year. A lot of the older ones have really pretty and classic names that aren't really used any more.
