What could be a reason why an academic would spell their first name with all lower case letters?

A lecturer of mine spells his name with all lower case letters. I am told this is not a spelling mistake, but it has some deep meaning or something along those lines? Anyone got an idea of why this might be?

my guess is artistic expression
Reply:Probably has the title Dr. in front of the name. When they get that they think they can make their own rules.
