What does it mean when you receive credit offers via mail with slight variations of your first name?

Ok, we all receive credit offers from companies who have access to a portion of our reports(but not our social security numbers). But have you ever received offers which come with a slight variation of you name? For instance, instead of Michael Moore, it would be Mike Moore, or Tif Moore instead of Tiffany Moore. Is this a sign someone may have obtained credit in your name using a slight alteration? What other way would these offers continue to come in this alternate name, if I've checked every company I have credit with and they've never used that name, and I've never used an alias name? How could I find out where these companies got this alternate(shortened) version of my first name?

Dear Seeking Answers,

Thank you for asking this.

I've been divorced for nearly 15 years and mine eyes have seen a multitude of credit offers!

I resumed using my maiden name at the divorce but over these past 15 years I often received more mail for a person with my ex-husband's FIRST name and my LAST name. I finally ended up submitting that name for the permanent No Mail list because it never worked to simply put all the pieces of the credit offer in the postage paid envelope with a note saying this person does not exist.

What a blessing that No Mail list has been! If you are interested I'll see if I can find the link. -JOYfilled

Reply:They are probably getting your name from some company that is selling your information from some list of members or people who surf the net, pick up tidbits and sell what they can find. You can actually opt out of those kinds of credit offers. There's some kind of Federal law that allows you to do that.

Below is a Federal Trade Commission website that might be of assistance.
